Yesterday was another crazy one, and I spent very little time with Finn the Rhodesian Ridgeback. She was reluctantly glad to see me when I went to check on her. The dog I picked up yesterday, that was left by her owner for weeks at a time, is very sweet, and I thought would make a good companion to Finn in my bathroom/bedroom where a large dog run is attached. It was now dark and, before I brought the dog in, I let Finn out into the run. She searched out every inch and began to act as if she was going to jump over. Like an idiot I didnt have her on leash and was afraid to go back inside to get it. I tried to calm her but she kept backing away and going to the fence. I grabbed her collar and she sat down and dug her feet into the 8 or so inches of snow. There was no moving this 80 lb girl. The more tense and nervous I became so did she. The wind was blowing snow so hard I was miserable. I was very fragile emotionally yesterday and this was the last thing I needed. Finally I sat in the snow and began to cry. I was so afraid she was going to get away from me which would be a nightmare trying to catch a dog like this. I pleaded, Finn....please dont do this. Please come inside. I promise Im not going to hurt you! With tears rolling down my face her eyes softened, and she came to me. But when I grabbed her collar she again resisted tightly. I decided I had to risk it and walked into the house to get her leash. She followed me closer to the door and sat to let me put on the leash. Finn was not going to go inside! Still crying I again sat on the ground. She came over and put her paw on my shoulder. I reached way down deep with all my strength (which was definitely waining), picked her up and took her through the door. Ive never been so relieved in all my life. Then I go to the truck and get the new dog out. She follows me on leash into the run and balks a little at the door. When I opened it she finally follows me in. Thats when Finn gets in an attack stance, freezes, shows her teeth and growls a deep growl at the new dog. Holy mackeral.......when is this day going to end..... I had to put Finn in the bedroom and leave the new girl in my bathroom. Finn, Finn.....what are we going to do with you girl?
