Yesterday was going to be a terrible library day. There was going to be disciplinary action and employees demanding my head on a flaming pike. And then it wasnt. Then I reread policy and crunched numbers (and prayed just a little) and revisited my professional values and recalled board conversation and had meetings with staff. And, now, after 3.5 years at a library averaging around 10-11 part-time employees at a time and one full-time director, well finally be becoming a library with 4 full-time paraprofessionals, one full-time director, and one part-time associate. No one was mad. No one demanded an execution. All this was done through attrition. Were very excited about the possibilities in the new year with staff now able to focus on THIS job instead of all their other part-time jobs. We can do targeted professional development without having to coordinate with other jobs. Tears have been shed. Lives have been changed. Patrons will benefit. Im so proud.
