Yesterday was neck day. Tight neck from a whiplash. One from poor posture, a researcher. Another from poor technique when swimming. The last from lack of core strength. All of them presented with neck pain, and yet the causes were different. Should they be treated the same and given the same cookie cutter homework? Of course not! Each patient/client must be treated individually and be given a home exercise program specifically tailored for them. Heres an example. The researcher complained of fatigue in his upper traps and posterior neck muscles. This fatigue is not from muscle weakness, but rather overwork. His neck flexors, specifically his longus colli, were totally dysfunctional, thus creating the 42 lb head. He had been doing neck strengthening, but without first releasing the posterior neck muscles. The protocol is important because it reprograms the brain. Teach the brain proper sequencing and the body will follow.
