Yesterday was the anniversary of the passing of King Kalakaua on January 20, 1891 at the Palace Hotel (photo below at left) in San Francisco. According to an article in the New York Times (01-21-1891), the attending physicians diagnosed the King as having Bright’s disease. Using todays medical knowledge, that diagnosis would most likely have been End Stage Renal Disease (fatal kidney disease). It is said that it seemed as though he was getting better for a while after his arrival, but upon returning from a journey to Southern California, the King’s health had deteriorated. King Kalakaua’s body returned to Hawaii on the same ship that he used to travel to California, the U.S.S. Charleston. The photo below at right shows the Kings body lying in state being mourned by Queen Kapiolani in the Throne Room.
