Yesterday we asked which song of ours youd like to know the story - TopicsExpress

Yesterday we asked which song of ours youd like to know the story behind & In Loving Memory got a fair few votes so here goes... In Loving Memory was one of the last songs written for Daydream Anonymous in 2007. With our new line-up the songwriting dynamics naturally changed & I had the opportunity to delve a bit more into the sort of music I wanted to create. At the time I was very interested in splicing things up in the technical department whilst still making melody & structure the main focus. I think this song is probably the most complex song guitar-wise on the album & took a while to nail the riffs whilst also singing it simultaneously, but its good to challenge yourself. I think the guitar parts, although tricky (at least for me) are still very melodic as opposed to a miss mash of notes for the sake of it & accompany the vocals well considering what the song is about. A recurring theme throughout Daydream Anonymous is about a break-up & was a pretty cathartic experience, if not a strange time for me. There are a fair few quieter songs on the album that also explore the aftermath of said relationship whereas this one is probably the most aggressive, not in an angry way as such but just emotionally. Id say its more of an attack on myself & the situation. You know me, Im a soppy chap & like to write about said soppy feelings (cue cries of EMO!) Some of the lyrics refer to personal memories (which Ill leave ambiguous) but for me the most powerful poignant part of the song is the finale with the screamed lyric, For all youve given me, for all youve taken. This is actually one of the only screams on the album, less is more & all that. Unlike most of the albums songs this one doesnt have any vocal harmonies which was intentional so that its just one man spilling his guts on a song rather than decorating it & maybe losing some of the emotion you get with one voice. Its also the only InMe song (if memory serves) that never repeats lyrics. This was so I could say a lot more within 5 minutes than if the chorus lyrics were repeated. We recorded Daydream Anonymous in Sweden in the middle of nowhere which kept us focused but also, a little crazy. It was a fun time in many ways but also rather sleepless for myself which felt very surreal. Still hugely proud of the album & what Greg & Si brought to it. I reckon its my favourite InMe album as well as The Pride, although Trilogy is definitely going to take the crown, for me anyway. Hope youve enjoyed this insight, let me know below which song youd like me to do next & I shall when I get some free time. Thanks! Dave McPherson P.S. Was T-Rex Dave ever able to drink a pint again with those cruel, short arms?
