Yesterday we did a puja for Saraswati Devi, the Hindu Goddess of knowledge, and I felt an impulse to share some words from within. Often we give prayers to God for success in our life. What is success anyway? Is it in our possessions, our status, our achievements? Does this make a person higher in value than another? My spiritual journey has taught me that at the very core of our being is the highest perfection. We are each a part of the supreme consciousness that is the origin of all creation, and since we are already perfect, why is there a need to prove ourselves? Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m all about working hard and achieving your dreams (why else am I here in India), but only if it’s purely out of the pursuit of joy and happiness, and not from a space of “I need to prove my worth to others”. To focus externally, and on the opinion of others or what you perceive to be your own status or wealth, is the nature of the ego. But to know that you’re already successful is the nature of the soul, spirit, or whatever you want to call it. I remember people telling me, after telling them about pursuing music in India, that they believe I will succeed because I’m talented, and that they wouldn’t have the same belief in others who aren’t as talented. This bothered me, it made me think “If I weren’t talented, then my friends wouldn’t believe in me?” Ive also been told by a few people not to pursue music, because the field is unstable and its impossible to make a career out of it in this day and age. It’s very sad that we live in a judgmental society, where many of us are influenced by others in our ideas of what we can or can’t do. If we are all perfect inside, then why can’t we all achieve whatever we want to? All we need is persistence, patience and a firm belief in ourselves. If you disagree, then what about the many successful people in this world with humble beginnings and who overcame hardship after hardship to get to where they are now. Are they any different from us? Were they more privileged? Did they have some divine grace that no one else has? No. Let them be an example of what we ALL can achieve ourselves. I’ve realized that success is a mentality more than a status. Irrespective of what people say about me, whether I’m talented enough or not, whether I’m worthy or not, whether I’m capable or not, I know that I am a success by default, and I have all the potential in me to fulfill my desires and dreams! And so do you! I don’t care what you may think of yourself, or if someone tells you that your dreams are impractical or impossible, they are mistaken. I BELIEVE IN YOU and I know that anything is possible with a positive mindset and a firm intention. I’ve also learned that life is meant to be a fun journey, and that the process matters more than the result. So don’t live your life focused on the end. Enjoy each day, have fun LIVING! Be in the moment, and be happy :).
