Yesterday we had 7 deaths from paraquat poisoning at our Animals Fiji Nadi Clinic. It was horrible! Paraquat is a fast-acting, broad spectrum, post-emergence herbicide. It is EXTREMELY toxic to all mammals--including humans. Death is typically caused by an insidious and irreversible form of respiratory failure. The half-life of paraquat in the soil is up to 20 years and should not be use any where near residential areas due to health concerns. We are tracking any poisoning deaths and encourage farmers, town councils, and individuals to use alternative chemicals for the safety of your animals, family, friends, and neighbors. Paraquat has been banned, or use disallowed, in 32 countries (including the countries of the European Union), mainly for health reasons.
