Yesterday we held an evacuation drill from the Ippon Matsu (Miracle Pine) and the Ippon Matsu Cafe (located in the parking lot across the street from the pine tree). The drill took place with the assumption there was another M9.0 class large earthquake followed by a tsunami warning. The intent was to see how long it would take to evacuate on foot, and also to take into consideration the time necessary for those with special needs. We assume mothers with infants and people with various physical challenges might need longer to get to higher ground safely, and indeed the drill gave us information which will be useful in the future as we fine tune our plans. The average time it took for people to get to safety was 15-23 minutes to walk 1 kilometer. We plan to hold similar drills in the future to maintain the safety of our residents and visitors.
