Yesterday we posted about the hog wrestling event that wrapped at the Noble County Community Fair. Now is your turn to be heard! Please take a moment to vote in this KPC Media poll about pig wrestling! Please expand and read on... kpcnews/poll_8fe51ba6-0c18-11e4-813f-0017a43b2370.html When we posted yesterday, we shared our concerns for the well-being of the animals involved, as well as the message it sends to especially the youth in our community. To summarize, In our view: 1. Captive animals have the right to be free from exploitation for entertainment, cruelty, neglect, and abuse. 2. Captive animals have the right to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care. 3. Captive animals have the right to live and grow at the rhythm and under the conditions of life and freedom peculiar to their species. 4. Captive animals should only be bred as part of a bonafide conservation program with appropriate, natural habitats that foster natural selection without diminishing genetic purity. 5. Captive animals should only be kept under compliance with all local, state, regional, national, and international laws. We greatly appreciate the call received yesterday afternoon from a local citizen concerned that our comments inaccurately insinuated that Noble County 4-H was responsible for the event occurring at the Noble County Community Fair. They are not. The Noble County Community Fair is an event brought to Kendallville by the Noble County Community Fair Board, and the youth of 4-H are merely participants - as are the many vendors and entertainers who are hired by the Fair Board. We certainly do not want the youth of 4-H to suffer any ill will or to lose potential supporters/donations based on distaste for pig wrestling. We are infinitely grateful for the generosity and efforts of Noble County 4-H and for making possible our very existence on former 4-H Park land. We hope those who share our concerns for the welfare of all animals in our community will join us in encouraging the Fair Board to make the 2014 hog wrestling event their last, and urge your voices and ideas for alternative forms of entertainment. Thank you. (Please take and share the poll). P.S. a previous post on this page shares expert opinions regarding natural pig behaviors and describes the very reasons we are concerned for the animals welfare when subjected to pig/hog wrestling events.
