Yesterday we spent our last day in France for a while, ending with a 9 hour hike that sent me stumbling and tumbling on a small, shallow stream crossing. Determined NOT to step in the water and get my boots wet as I crossed, I opted for the unstable, rounded rock, in the middle of the water crossing. My footing proved to be a bad choice and now I have a bad bruise or two or three to show for my efforts. Embarrassed as I tumbled, I caught myself quick enough to avoid wet clothes, but landed abruptly on a few slippery rocks. Ouch! The good news is… I bounce pretty well. Today we hiked in the shadow of some massive mountains with their incredible views, surrounded by cows and sheep sporting bells once again. A few marmots and ibex joined the nature walk as we found pristine spots to take a snack break and have our lunch. As we walked, we transitioned into the Italian Alps and witnessed the dramatic southern face of the Mont Blanc range. We will spend the night in the lovely Italian resort town of Courmayeur, at 4,014’. I remember it well, from my visit back in 1993. Blending old memories with new, I eagerly look forward to tomorrow’s steps.
