Yesterday we walked through huge fields of wildflowers amist flat high plateaus on the edge of massive gorges - bird watching. We saw a Red-Shouldered Falcon, a Hoopoe, a Long Legged Buzzard, a Eurasian Griffon and her fledglings (two nesting colonies), a lesser Kestrel, a flock of Rose Colored Starlings, a Eurasian Jay( which is called a Chat in Armenia), and many Shrikes, and Black Headed Buntings. Our guides were: Professor Mamikon Ghasabian, who authored the book, Birds of Armenia, and Local Armenian Bird Conservation Keeper Edward Shekoyan. We also hiked to a 12 century monastery, and drank from the famous spring written about by Tumanyan. The B & B was spectacular with their specialties of a vegetarian only menu. Thank you to fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, Mary Ann Hardy for arranging this fabulous day- a highlight of our time in Armenia!!!
