Yesterday, we were contacted by the Upper Midwest Great Dane - TopicsExpress

Yesterday, we were contacted by the Upper Midwest Great Dane rescue with news that one of their new family members had bolted from his foster home. Xanadu, a 3 year old male Great Dane had been on a walk with his new foster and something spooked him. He immediately tried to bolt from the foster and seeing that he is a strong boy at 135 pounds, the foster lost hold of the leash and Xana effortlessly ran off. As I regrouped with retriever Karie, in the fosters driveway this afternoon, I heard the sound of a distressed howling in the near distance. We immediately took off running towards it. We stopped a couple times on our hike through the woods, marsh and heavy brush to listen for the howling. After hiking for about 25 yards, squatting in the middle of a marsh, there he was about 15 yards in front of us, just inside a tree line. As we moved closer, he struggled a bit to break free from his leash that was tangled and wrapped several times around numerous small trees. Upon approach, we made sure we did not make direct eye contact with him and sat down within a couple feet of him. We sat there for a bit to hopefully make him realize we were not there to hurt him. I slowly started to offer him some pieces of cheeseburger - he took a few pieces from me. He then let me pet him on the neck, chin, ears and head. I then let him smell the slip lead and then rubbed his neck with it. I eventually got the lead over his head securely and then we were able to untangle the leash. I slowly walked him back out of the woods with Karie leading the way. We met up with Xanas foster dad and they were reunited on foster dads porch. Rest well sweet boy - we are all so happy that you are safe.
