Yesterday we were offered a boatload of chickens in exchange for something we had for sale. Not wanting to have to go through the sales pitch AGAIN, we said yes. I picked out a gorgeous trio of Lavender Orpingtons, a cute little blue Cochin hen, blue frizzle Cochin rooster (actually,he picked me, I did not want or need another roo...but he ran in my direction for help when somebody was picking on him) and a blue frizzle Cochin hen. Then Clark picked out a spectacularly marked Old English fawn rooster and mated hen and a cinnamon ginger hen. As we were walking away the guy reached down and picked up a little fluff of feathers and told me to give it to Clark. Tiniest little Golden Sebright pullet Ive ever seen (Clark named her Sprite...she needed water this morning and he couldnt bend over to turn on the hose so he gave her flat Sprite). Shes about the size of a songbird, so she can go right through dog crate and ex-pen wire! We spent today frantically repairing hitches and coops to keep them all housed until we can get the big coop and yard completed. Tonight, I heard a bump on the window and little Sprite had gotten out of her cage and was trying to fly up on the 52 bakers rack just outside. The big girls are roosting there until I get their new roost finished. She finally made it up there and jumped up on Dorothys back to snuggle in. Very odd little duck. Er, chick. I think she is the avian version of Pickles. (Clark went out and rescued her, she is now sleeping on the porch in a toy dog airline kennel stuffed with dried grass).
