Yesterday, while driving home, a recording of the Rachmaninov Paganini Rhapsody came on the radio. After a couple of minutes of listening, I became annoyed at the self indulgent, mannered and technically unimpressive version I was hearing. Once finished, the radio host came on and revealed who it was. To my amazement, it was one of the worlds most popular pianists. I try not to complain about other artists but this proves, once more, that being a house hold name often has more to do with a sort of enamorment than it does with the true value of what the artist is capable of producing in his work. Even in the classical world! We live in an increasingly vacuous and delusional world. The money, the publicity, the branding of an artist can very often be what people fall in love with- the dazzle, the glitter- not the substance. A few hours later, Sam and I jumped into the car again, and it was flooded by the most beautiful Chopin Waltz Ive heard in a long time. I immediately said, That must be Ingrid!! ( My dear friend, Ingrid Fliter) And it was. She is an artist of exceptional depth, beauty, sincerity, intelligence, and passion. She doesnt have the hype, media presence or money that the other pianist does, but she should, only because it would help to bring her beautiful art into every home, and makes this world a better one.
