Yesterday, while jogging my neighborhood, I saw a construction crew going to town renovating an old 1950s house and tossing tons of stuff into a dumpster. I went back later and did some trash pickin...and struck gold! The contents spewed the bright colors and wild designs of the 1950s, and reminders of what once made our country great. There were dozens of binders filled with classified and unclassified documents from the early space program--Project Mercury, Rocketdyne, the Aerospace Corporation, General Dynamics, McDonnell-Douglas. There were dozens of colorful matches from Las Vegas casinos and long gone LA establishments. There were boxes of unused stationary and envelopes from old hotels. There were reel to reel tapes, old vacuum tubes, and American made tools. There were Penn State fraternity magazines and maps and old airline tickets and a stack of letters from WW2 wrapped in twine. The preservationist in me is appalled this stuff almost went to the dump! Im happy when Im able to save stuff like this.
