Yesterday would have been my moms birthday. She left us in December 2006, and it hardly seems possible that its been 8 years since her passing. Tribute to Dean Layton 1928-2006 A precious woman of bountiful faith in God-she was Wife, Mom, Mother, Mama, Granny, Granny Dean, Sister, and Friend. As family we grew within her guidance while her heart overflowed with a bottomless, never-ending love for us. She taught us to be strong, independent, hard-working, honest, truthful, kind, and loving. She taught us to believe in God. Friends experienced her great kindness and generosity. She delighted in little babies and was overjoyed with each birth of her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, whom she spoiled unashamedly, and they adored her in return. She donated her money to St. Jude’s Hospital and treasured every little child and prayed for their healthy recovery. She was a wonderful seamstress; her daughters and granddaughters enjoyed the fruits of her talent. So many nights while they lay sleeping, she sewed into the wee hours of the morn to provide clothing for them. An excellent cook—nothing could beat her meatballs and gravy, chicken and dumplings, or Thanksgiving dressing. Her home was our gathering place for holidays where she always prepared a sumptuous feast. She loved to read and devoured book after book after book. She couldn’t sing a lick, but sang along to her favorite country and gospel songs anyway, and she would tap her feet to a good bluegrass tune. She loved her pastor, and his family, and her fellowship with Salem Baptist Church. She could beat anyone three out of four times in a game of SkipBo. She loved to travel, but the place that touched her heart, to which she returned again and again, was the Smoky Mountains. She never tired of their grandeur and beauty. She experienced hardships and pain, suffering the loss of two husbands, but she also led a rich, full life. She shared our joy in good times and gave unconditional support in bad times. For us she was like the mountains she loved. She was always beautiful and was our rock, our strength, our support. She was also the wind beneath our wings. Her love of God and her faith were like the mountains—ever strong and everlasting. I will lift mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalms 121: 1-2. We Love You and Will Always Miss You, The Family of Dean Layton
