Yet again Haaretz proves why its the most thought-provoking and independent journalistic force in contemporary Israel. Great article about the illustrious late Israeli Major General, Matti Peled, and his son, Miko Peled. Miko Peled is the author of the amazing book titled The Generals Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine, and also courageous (regardless of whether you agree with him or not) peace activist now living in San Diego, CA. The younger Peled had a moment of reckoning regarding his ideology and beliefs in the wake of his beloved nieces death due to a terrorist suicide bombing in Jerusalem in 1997. However, think of how hard it would be intellectually and spiritually, to come to the belief that there would be many more peoples loved ones killed so long as the status-quos unsustainable power dynamics continue on their current trajectory (millions of stateless, hopeless, dispossessed, desperate, second/third class citizens, and refugees continue to live or really merely exist as is)? This issue is not merely confined to Israel/Palestine, as it affects the neighboring conflicts in Syria; and to a lesser extent Lebanon, Egypt, and other nations. All who care and yearn for a peaceful Holy Land- which believe it or not actually has historical precedent, in contrast to the dismissive claim: theyve been continuously fighting for thousands of years- should read and study the issues more instead of adhering to comfortable dogmas. The key to peace is ending the idea of ethnocracy (whether Arab or Jewish), and instead to embrace democracy wherein not just all Israeli and Palestinian nationals have citizenship, but all the population of geographic Israel/Palestine irregardless of race, religion, or ethnicity. This is my dream, prayer, and hope! As the only thing scarier than tearing down separation walls for the fostering of a societal melting pot, is the alternative of continuing down the path of the repeatedly failures of the U.S. mediated peace process, or worse a hardening of the status quos attitudes, thus ensuring even more deterioration and an eventual end game wherein remaining Palestinian territories are simply annexed into the greater Israel Proper, and then the world just moves on and forgets? #Peace4IsraelPalestine
