Yet again, President Obama has been slow to react to a growing foreign policy crisis. The situation in Iraq has deteriorated to the point that action must be taken by the international community to stave off further genocide. That includes US air strikes and humanitarian aid. No ground troops. No long term commitment. No nation building by force of arms. Limited but forceful strategic strikes that bring a reprieve from this growing menace to humanity that is ISIS. The US seems hamstrung by indecision. Perhaps Obama is trying to retrench the US too quickly. Perhaps the international community has atrophied capacity to respond after years of US dependence. Regardless, we must lead even as we take a step back from our international military role. I understand I am in the minority with my foreign policy views. I hold onto the belief that there is a role for the leading nations of the world in protecting the life and liberty of our fellow human beings. I believe if a force, like ISIS, is intent on committing genocide then it must be stopped. President Bushs foreign policy failures has resulted in US politics, particularly President Obama, rushing too quickly toward retrenchment. Our financial situation demands that our allies pick up more of the slack but we cannot simply neglect these global calamities. The views of the far Left and far Right wings of our politics have taken advantage of the Bush Presidency and financial crisis. They have convinced the majority of Americans that we should turn a blind eye to the rest of the world. IMO, this represents the biggest threat to international liberalism and the progress of humanity. The US facilitated 70 years of relative major power peace and even though we had some severe mistakes along the way we should not forget the lessons of FDR and Churchill. The foundations of the Atlantic Charter and what the UN are still relevant and vital. We should not neglect our role in the world. We need leaders that remind the American people that the US is the most indispensable nation on the planet and that the future well being of our own decedents, and the world, depend on us taking on this responsibility. Do not forget the great feats of that greatest generation. It was for them that we have had such opportunity, as they beat back tyranny and formed a new world of opportunity, and we have their resolve to continue carrying the torch as we light the path of liberty through the 21st century.
