An adaptation of a much earlier anti Jacobite song of unknown origins, it was published in 1793 in James Johnson’s ‘Scots Musical Museum’, and later republished in James Hogg’s ‘Jacobite Reliques’ (1817). It is set to the tune ‘My Love’s in Germany’ by Hector MacNeil. The song resonates as powerfully today as in Burns own tumultuous times for its powerful anti war message. In Burns’ day as in ours, the wealthy and well connected concoct the wars and the poor suffer by them.
