Yet another attempt to couch Ukraine crisis as something more than naked conflict of interests (as breaking International Law is nothing new to any major power). But this one, unlike Kerrys, is not dumb, just purposefully confusing. The Harvard graduate is clearly the smartest of them all and thought this through. Obama: In 2014, we are well beyond the days when borders can be redrawn over the heads of democratic leaders. Wow! A) So is this One cannot redraw borders over the heads of democratic leaders while perhaps they can do it over the heads of undemocratic leaders the way US does it all the time? Yet, 1) the only democratically elected leader in Ukraine was Yanukovich (even though corrupt) who was forced out and 2) Yatzuk is not democratically elected leader of Ukraine by any measure (parliament that elected him represents half of the country at best since the rest of representatives fled). So statement does not rebut: Ukraine is a failed state, without democratic government, hence we intervened for now to protect interests of our minority. B) Does he mean democratic leaders like in me, Angela, Cameron? But that is just a vague casual statement, not a policy statement and we need one. Sort of like, US does not obey International law so lets not refer to it but rather to this case as some sort of new page in international relations. Flimsy at best. Plus, South Sudan and Kosovo are counterexamples if that is meant to be a policy statement at all.
