Yet another management failure by the BLM...and what a big - TopicsExpress

Yet another management failure by the BLM...and what a big disappointment in the Scott City feedlot that is serving as the holding pen for these 1,500 mares. The reasons for death of the horses, listed as a result of their age combined with stress from the recent relocation, the shift from pasture to corral environment, and the change from pasture feed to processed hay feed, indicate poor management (with perhaps the exception of age). Anyone who knows the slightest bit about horse management knows that changing a horses environment and feed has to be handled carefully and slowly; otherwise, a variety of health problems can result. Nearly 60 horses out of 1,500 dying in a period of 6 weeks - especially with no evidence of disease - is unreasonable. Perhaps even more bothersome is that 13 more had to be euthanized on site by the USDA veterinarian when he/she arrived. These horses were at nearly two months post-transport - their poor health is evidence of more than just transition stress. It is evidence of poor equine management and lack of adequate veterinary care.
