Yikes! This fall snowstorm is a reminder to us all that winter is on its way. Still havent finished all your fall clean-up projects? We have some mild days ahead that will give us all a bit more time to finish our fall clean-up duties. Below are some helpful tips to prepare your lawn and gardens for the upcoming winter. 1. Plant your spring flowering bulbs. You can plant spring flowering bulbs right up until the ground is frozen. Fertilize them with Bulb-tone™ for stronger, healthier bulbs. 2. Spray your evergreens with Wilt-Pruf™ or Wilt-Stop™ when temperatures are above 40º to help prevent winter burn. 3. Clean up your perennial beds. Removing waste material from your perennial beds can help prevent pest and disease problems next year. Plants that benefit the most from fall clean-up are phlox, peonies, roses, and German irises. 4. Mulch for winter protection after the ground freezes, but not when the ground is covered in snow. Evergreen boughs are great for mulching because they allow air passage, help insulate, are easy to remove in the spring, and do not harbor many pests. 5. Spray deer-susceptible plants with Deer-Off™. 6. Wrap tree guards around lower portions of trunks of smaller trees, as high as snow is likely to cover, to protect bark from rodent damage. 7. Rake up the leaves. Matted leaves can kill the grass underneath. We carry all products needed to help winterize the garden: mulches, burlap, stakes, rakes, shrub protectors, tree guards and more.
