Yin and yang of teaching: I get to be part of a joyful sharing of warmth for the wet, rainy season in the earlier part of the week. Then I find out that one of my little ones is living with his 4 aunties whove been playing 3 card monty with a single California ID card since they all look similar, custodial Grandma passed away 4 months ago and Mom is out of the country. The man who came to the parent orientation, and who has been picking him up every day, is an uncle not the dad (theres no dad on the birth certificate). I discover this all by accident because I pay attention and I don[t know the woman whos come to pick up my student. She gets belligerent with me for not letting her pick up her nephew. No, I dont have an ID on me, I came from really far away and Ive got an appointment, is this going to take long? I came cause everyone else is busy today. Whats the problem? Im the one who drops him off every day! Then the dim bulb tries to mad dog me and move in on me to intimidate me then realizes that a) theres a whole lobby of witnesses to her nonsense and b) Ive got her by 8 and 50 lbs. minimum. So the Principal tells 3 of the 4 aunties, who show up within 10 minutes, that from this time forward, whoever picks up my student will have to provide ID every day and sign him out so we know whos picking him up and that he wont be able to attend any more field trips because theres no legal guardian to sign the authorization for emergency treatment portion of the field trip permission slip. My student wasnt at school today.
