Yogis of facebook: Jules Mitchell Yogas blog is a great resource. Im currently having the pleasure of previewing her Masters Thesis in the science of stretching. What I love about Jules work is that it pays intimate attention to how our language for interoceptive states can give us very misguided therapeutic ideas. Stiff things do not need to open, for one thing. And tight is a sensation, and not a mechanical quantity that can be altered through stretching. As a biomechanist questioning the common aphorisms of asana instruction, shes revealing a deep material poetics that links human structure to all structure. Because her study is directly drawing from adventures on the mat, I find it natural to extrapolate her findings to other areas of yogic concern. Im thinking especially of her work on the stress-strain curve: ones evolving personhood can be loaded and tested by practice at a rate that enriches and strengthens, or a rate that distorts and fractures.
