Yolanda: The Messenger “There are two problems for our species’ survival –nuclear war and environmental catastrophe –and we’re hurtling towards them, knowingly.” After that massive death and destruction caused by the typhoon “Pablo”, the Philippines was considered as the most disaster-affected country in the world in 2012. The scenes of destruction by “Pablo” last year were refreshed and came as a disturbing reminder for the people of how some lessons, no matter how painful, are never learned. Climate change has been an indispensable concern to humankind. Now it looks as if, because of our insensitivity and inattentiveness, Mother Nature has given the humankind another lesson to learn through the messenger –Yolanda. It seems, history repeats itself. According to the Philippines government’s Climate Change Commission, Haiyan or Yolanda as the Filipinos call her is the result of climate change and will be followed by many more storms of even greater destructive power in the years and decades to come. :( The show has begun for a long time. >:( People just tend to be reactive wherein they just react on what happened and or what is happening today and don’t think of the future. Yolanda, as the nth messenger, has given the humankind a harder poke on the back letting us not just to fall from a high cliff but also causing us to death, softly. The saddest part was, Yolanda did not knock on the door and came in untold. She caused havoc and sufferings to these souls in the Philippines. The message of Yolanda should be tattooed in the mind that it is just a beginning of far worse natural catastrophe and we should give a necessary reply at this instant. We, Filipinos, were known to be inevitably resilient, has the spirit and a bunch of survivors. Yolanda, as painful and disastrous as it seems, gives us another hope and chance for considerable changes not just for one but also for the many, not just for the leaders but also for the constituents, not just for a family but also for the whole society itself. This day’s generation is considered to be the agents of change –the preserver of the future world. There are many organizations built to address whatever concerns may come. If we all join hands not just in addressing but making changes, we will be able to avoid much casualties especially loss of life. We have to be pro-active. We should think not just for today but for the future –our children. And we can begin this in ourselves by being responsible, disciplined and concerned on what is happening on our surroundings. A simple act for today can change the world. Think that someones sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.
