Yom HaShoah is a somber day that marks the ruthless and systematic murder of nearly six million Jewish men, women and children by the evil Nazi regime during the Holocaust. On this occasion, Canadians from all backgrounds remember the horrors of the Shoah, pay tribute to the innocent victims and honour the brave survivors. During my visit to Israel earlier this year, Laureen and I had the privilege of visiting Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and laying a wreath to honour the victims of the Holocaust. This experience was very meaningful and profound for both of us. Walking through Yad Vashem, I was struck by how the Shoah was so premeditated, so monstrous and so barbaric. I was reminded of the importance of Holocaust education and remembrance, as well as our responsibility to learn from the brave survivors and to combat anti-Semitism in all its forms. The Holocaust was one of the darkest chapters in human history. Yom HaShoah reminds us that the Holocaust must never be forgotten and that we must remain vigilant against all forms of prejudice and hatred to ensure that such unspeakable acts of inhumanity never happen again.
