Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Championship Awards Dinner Dance The Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Championship Awards Dinner Dance takes place at York Racecourse on Saturday 26th October and with a National Award winner among the glitterati it will no doubt be an excellent night! Jacquline Coward, a clear winner of the White Rose Saddlery Ladies Championship with 83 points – 51 points ahead of her nearest rival is also the National Lady Champion, a first for Yorkshire. In second place was Emma Todd and excellent achievement for a young jockey who was a novice at the beginning of the season (had ridden less than five winners) and means she is also the Cundalls Novice Lady Champion. The Mens equivalent, also sponsored by Cundalls was Rees Morgan-Murphy, son of trainer Ferdy Murphy, while Richard Smith took the Tennants Auctioneers Gentlemans’ Championship title for the first time. Richard, based at Ferryhill, has progressed through the ranks since he started riding, aged 17 in 2006 and had his first winner on Abandon Ship in 2008. Still young, it would be no surprise to see him win this award again in the future. Richard said, “I am thrilled to be Yorkshire Area Mens Champion for the first time. I have had great season but couldnt do it without those who have supported me.” The Northern Bookmakers Protection Association Open Horse award goes to Elusive Swallow, a very game mare who started her winning tally at the first meeting of the season at Sheriff Hutton in January and partnered by Jacqueline Coward, contributed to her title winning achievements. In owning and training a number of horses for her daughter, Cherry Coward is the recipient of the J A G Burnell & Son (Electrical) Leading Owner. The Novice Horse equivalent went to Peter Deal’s Duchess Theatre who won twice and was placed twice in the Yorkshire area. Miss Chatterbox won the Howard Brown Memorial Trophy for the Best Homebred Horse. Owned and trained by the Dawson Family the mare won twice and was placed twice before progressing to hunterchases. A new award to be presented on the evening is the Elaine Smith Memorial Shield for the horse with most wins. This award also goes to Michael Broad’s Elusive Swallow and is presented in memory of Elaine Smith, mother of Gentlemens’ Champion Richard Smith, a very well-respected and successful point-to-point trainer, who sadly lost her battle with cancer last summer. Other awards to be presented on the evening are the Alan Smith award for the jockey with the most wins and ride of the season. Tickets are £50 each and can be booked with Kirsty Burnell by phoning 01423 359515 or emailing kirstyburnell@hotmail.
