Yorkshire Puddings - sort of. Its the Sunday before Christmas and the weekend to have Aunty Mary over for Christmas Dinner. My sister Maggie came too. Aunty Mary (who is 90 this year and has Alzheimers) often says We always had either roast beef or roast lamb on a Sunday when we were growing up. and I always reply that this is not the war years and nowadays beef and lamb are meats reserved for high days and holidays. Aunty Mary then talks of the workhouse and I tell her how the idea of the workhouse is a romantic vision to me as I see the majority of the families in my town living in poverty; starving and abandoned by our government. Anyhow, today, as a Christmas treat we bought beef but it cost £30!!! Which is a 2 week food budget for most of the families I know. It felt and tasted like a sin. And it consisted of (as the pictures will show) roasting and boiling the bones for the gravy, peeling and chopping and scraping and God knows what else until Id almost lost the will to live. I have to say that my Yorkshire puddings were a total triumph. Id be hard pressed to give you a recipe though. I reckon on one egg each and enough flour to make a thick and gloopy batter then add salt and milk until its a medium batter kind-of-thing. To be honest, you just have to watch it. Ill make a Video.
