You Can Get Started Now (Part 4 of 4 of Reflections for a High School Guidance Class The most important key to being a successful teacher is to like being with students. You should not wait until you become a teacher to find out what its really like. As a high school student, if the thought of any sort of teaching career is appealing to you, you may be able to start right now. On Kaua`i, people very often simply dont think of getting a tutor. Historically, tutors have not been common, and they tend to represent help only for struggling students. The vast majority of families on Kaua`i cannot readily afford supplementary education, and they certainly cant readily afford high-level professional educational supports such as provided here at Kaulele. Many, however, might consider paying minimum wage to a competent high school student to help out with an educational need. By offering your services as a tutor, you might find an opportunity to earn a little extra money, to enjoy helping someone feel successful, and to get a taste of being a teacher. Additionally, you will create something excellent to which you can refer on your college application essay. Are you a whiz at math? Perhaps you can help a neighbors younger child who struggles with their math homework. Do you love to write? Perhaps you can help a younger student with their English homework or offer a private class in creative writing during the summer. Did you ace the SAT? Someone needs your help. Are you great at tennis, soccer, baseball, or some other sport? You might actually sell your services as a Saturday morning coach to a young boy or girl. Or you might use your mutual love of basketball to motivate a kid to simply get his work done so you can shoot some baskets together when he finishes. It can be a fine way to help motivate a young kid who doesnt really want to do his work. How would you get students? Simple. You have a mouth; use it. Word-of-mouth is really the only way. People will hire you because they know something about you and your good nature, your reliability, and your skill. Tell your friends and neighbors. Tell your teachers. Tell your counselor and the people at your church. Be prepared for rejection, but be open to opportunity. Dont promise anything you cant deliver. The odds are, you have a lot to offer. There are people out there who would like to take advantage of that. Good luck!
