You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Matthew 24:44 Have you ever been caught doing something other than your job when suddenly your boss walks in and catches you red-handed? Youre definitely in for a scolding, a verbal warning, a written warning, or possibly all three! In the same manner, the Lords return will come at a time when we least expect it. I often wonder what I would be doing when then and I pray that even though I may be caught by surprise, I hope to be ready. About two years ago, Harold Camping, an evangelist, author and Christian radio broadcaster, gained instant popularity for predicting that the Rapture, would happen on May 21, 2011. This would then be followed by the end of the world on October 21, 2011. His prediction was publicized in social media, billboards, along with many other forms of marketing. They say that millions were spent to spread the word to many countries around the globe. According to his followers, approximately 200 million people, or roughly 2.8% of the worlds population then, would be raptured. It was a prediction that deceived many despite the Lords pronouncement that no one knew the day or the hour of His return. As you can tell, when the fateful day came, nothing happened. In Matthew 24:36-39, Jesus said, No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Campings prediction was unbiblical as it tried to dismiss the Lords words that no one knew the day or hour except the Father. Thats why the Lord gave us the signs for His coming instead. It is important that we are kept unaware so that we prepare ourselves for His second coming with a genuine reverence for the Lord rather than a half-hearted preparation because we know we have enough time to get ready. Rather than trying to find out when the Lords return is, let us focus our energies in doing Gods will by being faithful to our responsibilities and His calling for our lives. Since the Lord will surely return at an unannounced date, devote yourself to being faithful to the Lord and the responsibilities He has given you. If you have to cook for your family, then cook the best that you can. If you have to be at a meeting then be there on time and ready to contribute. If you have to meet with your discipler then be open and ready to learn. Regardless of the role that you play in life and how many hats you have to put on (as a father, son, boss, community member, disciple, etc.), do what you need to do at any given time. The Lord will consider you faithful for doing what He called you to do at that time when He returns.
