You are My All in All - The Story Behind the Song... Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. 1 Corinthians 8:6; Romans 11:36 You are My all in all was written in 1989 while Dennis Jernigan was working at a church in Oklahoma City. We were well on our way to really understanding more of what God wanted me to do with my life. There he led a daily prayer meeting at 6.00am, leading worship from the piano. One day while contemplating - Like so many mornings before - how God had changed his life, a thought came to him. He was sitting at the piano thanking God for the fact that He bore the punishment for my sin, paid my debt full with the first drop of His blood. In that moment, the line came to him, seeking You as a precious Jewel, Lord, to give up, Id be a fool. Looking back at what that lyric meant and still means Jernigan explains, Jesus is worth the fight I have to go through to get to know Him. Hes worth the onslaught of the enemy that tries to derail me, that tries to get me to remember what my life was like before, when thats no longer who I am. He is the source of my very existence, he continues with unaffected conviction. The source of my life, the source of my freedom. He is the source of everything I am. Hes my all in all. The song emerged in pieces during that prayer time. Dennis would get the group praying for specific needs in the church, then return to singing. It was - and remains - Jernigans habit always to carry a music manuscript book with him. I believe God sings over me, he explains, referring to Zephaniah 3:17, so I need to be listening, while I sing over Him. When I hear God, I write it down right away Lord, to give up Id be a fool, You are my all in all... It was pretty much a spontaneous song. I sat there, and Id start the people praying over a specific need in the church, then I would go back to singing what I was sensing in the Lord. With my left hand Id play the piano, and with my right hand Id write down the melody and the words, he says. Thats how the song was born. It was so indelible in my heart, I couldnt forget it - but I did write it down right then. We started singing it the very next service in our church. Countless number of worshipers are drawn to the song. What counsel would Jernigan give these men and women of God? Seek Jesus and not a ministry He says pointedly. Ministry flows out of life.
