You are all Free and Pardoned! When the Muslims eventually entered Makkah, chanting “God is Great!” in their large numbers and destroying idols in the streets of Makkah and at the Kaabah, all the Makkans were in their homes, griped with fear. None of them: Abu Sufyan, Hind, Suhail or any other elders dared came out. On the other hand, the Muslims trouped into the Kaabah. Bilal immediately climbed the Kaabah and made the call to prayer, his voice echoing to the nooks and cranny, homes and hills of Makkah. The Holy Prophet (SAW) then sent Bilal, Umar bn AlKhattab and others to declare to the Makkans who were hiding in their homes, that: “O people of Makkah, come out and meet God’s messenger at the Kaabah. You are all safe. O people of Makkah.” Hearing this, nearly all of them, including Abu Sufyan came out of their homes and to the Kaabah and the Holy Prophet (SAW) addressed them thus: “People of Quraysh, God Has taken away from you the past pride of ignorance that attached great honour and pride to your ancestors. All people are the descendants of Adam, and Adam was created form sand. People of Quraysh, what judgement do you think I am going to pass against you today?"They all answered,"You are an honourable brother and the son of an honourable brother.” He then said to them,"You may all go free. You are all pardoned."When Abu Sufyan came back from the Kaabah, he met Hind very quiet in her room. “It’s over now, Abu Sufyan?” she asked, as if talking to herself. “Yes. It’s all over, Hind.” Abu Sufyan answered her, and continued. “I swear, he is the kindest and most compassionate of all people.” Hind looked up at Abu Sufyan and said, quietly, “So,as from now, we are Muhammad’s freed people?” Abu Sufyan looked distressed but managed to say, “That is the result we brought ourselves. People went ahead of us while we lagged behind. But he has been generous and forgiving, besides, we should bear the consequences of our actions.” “Have men pledged him?” asked Hind. “Yes”, answered Abu Sufyan. “Tomorrow, women will do theirs.” Hind looked down and said, soberly, “After all I did to his uncle, Hamzah?” Abu Sufyan said to her, soothingly, “He does not refuse anyone who comes to him seeking safety and pledging loyalty. He has accepted my pledge, why wouldn’t he accept yours?”
