Hebron is a city of conflict and hate. It is the home of one of the first Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the only one right in the heart of a Palestinian city. Kicking, spitting, stone-throwing and abuse are part of the daily routine. Children, women and the army participate in this war between “neighbours”. The inhabitants of Hebron and people working there explain their daily struggle. 500 extremist fanatical and racist Israeli settlers supported by the strong arm of the Israeli military (about 2 000 soldiers) make life a living hell for 170 000 Palestinians living in Hebron… Settler vandalism and violence, carried out with impunity from the Israeli authorities, is commonplace. The morning will be interspersed with music performed by our Palestinian friends. Background The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed by the United Nations on or around 29 November each year. On that day in 1947, the General Assembly adopted resolution 181 (II), which came to be known as the Partition Resolution. That resolution provided for the establishment in Palestine of a “Jewish State” and an “Arab State”, with Jerusalem as a corpus separatum under a special international regime. Of the two States to be created under this resolution, only one, Israel, has so far come into being. This day has traditionally provided an opportunity to focus attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people are yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, i.e. the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property from which they had been displaced. The whole issue of Palestinian statehood has come to the fore in the last year with the overwhelming vote of 138 nations, including Thailand, in favour of Palestine’s status as a Non-Member Observer State at the UN and its earlier admission as a full member of UNESCO. N.B. Advance registration is a must! Otherwise, you will risk not being admitted.
