You are here Home Local table tennis future on show at Solo champs Published: Saturday, September 7, 2013 Text Size: Jasher De Gannes, a member of the senior women’s team which won gold at the just concluded 55th Caribbean Regional Table-Tennis Championship in St Lucia will be the headline player when the Solo National Junior Championships serves off at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, in Tacarigua, from 9.30 am today. The 11-year-old De Gannes who along with France-based Rheann Chung, 10-time national champion Aleena Edwards and Linda Partap-Boodhan formed the women’ s team which won T&T’s team title after they also won in 2004 on home soil, four years later in Jamaica and 2009 in French Guiana also won silver with Chung in the women’s doubles. Earlier last month, she helped T&T to 18 medals—eight gold, four silver and six bronze medals-to be the overall champions of the Eighth Caribbean Regional Table-Tennis Federation Pre-Cadet Championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Georgetown, Guyana, De Gannes steered the Under-13 girls to the team (Shanekah Johnson, Ray J Thomas, Chelsea Fong) title on and also won gold in the mixed doubles with Joshua Maxwell, as well as the girls doubles with Johnson, and the singles crown. In addition to De Gannes of Tobago, the other gold medal winners for T&T from the Pre-Cadet Championship expected to participate in the Solo Juniors are Messiah Walcott, Maxwell, Jakeem Welch, Brandon Beharry, Roberto Johnson, Brandon Lee Young, Aaron Amoroso and Derron Douglas. Among the girls are Shurja Welch, Ackayla Lucas, Johnson, Thomas and Fong. The main focus in the boys’ competition will be on teenagers, Arun Roopnarine, the defending U-21 singles champion and his main rival Aaron Wilson, the U-18 title-holder. Last year, Wilson captured an astonishing four titles when the event was held at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas. Tournament Schedule Today: 9.30 am: U-11 boys singles groups; 11 am: U-11 girls singles & Under-15 boys singles; 12 noon: Under-21 Doubles; Under-21 singles 2pm: Under-15 girls & Under-21 girls Tomorrow: 9:30 am: U-13 boys singles; 11 am: U-13 girls singles; 12 noon: U-18 boys singles & U-18 girls singles; 2 pm: Under 15 doubles.
