You are spoiled. I am spoiled too. When you learn to jump at a busy turbine DZ like SDD, it is easy to think the whole jumping world is the same way. It is not. Many newly licensed jumpers venture out to other DZs and have unpleasant surprises when they discover how many other DZs are run. A few of the surprises that jumpers have experienced are: • A solitary piston engine aircraft rather than multiple turbine aircraft. • Small LZs with nearby hazards. • No fun jumpers to play with. • Fun jumpers with an unwelcoming attitude. • L-O-N-G waits for loads. • No paid packing available. • Tiny packing area. • No food • No camping • No nightlife • No showers • Lousy orientation • Confusing manifesting The best way to avoid some of these surprises is to ask the senior jumpers at SDD about the DZ that you are considering visiting. The odds are very good that at least one of us has been there and can give you good information. There are lots of great places to jump, and some of the smaller ones can be good experiences with a bit of advance information to prevent surprises. Doorrr!
