You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. -Psalm 77:14 Why is this happening to me, God? Surely there is some mistake! Thats probably what the Israelites were thinking when, after they left slavery in Egypt, they had been unable to find any water in the wilderness for three days. And when they find water, it was too bitter to drink. Then the people complained of thirst. After all, without water, they would die (Exodus 15:22-25). Its important to note the people hadnt done anything wrong. Nor had they strayed from Gods directions. So why did the Lord allow this? He had a purpose; He had things He wanted to teach His people. And afterward, consistent with His goodness, God did a wonderful work and lead the Israelites to an oasis abounding with good water (verse 27). Are you in the wilderness now, kneeling before bitter water? Perhaps you feel God has made a mistake. But God never does. He has His purposes, and we need to trust Him.
