You can view a relationship as useful. If it is useful, then it achieves meaningfulness to you. You can use a relationship, but you cannot use people. When the relationship is not being maintained when you acquire benefits, then you are taking only from the broken relationship as much as is left in it (as your moral conscience perceives of it). For the rest you would be taking from the person and using him/her. You might put more into the relationship afterwards to return what was taken from the person. Yet, if the relationship is being well-maintained by your efforts, then you reap from the relationship from which the other person can benefit as well. Relationships can be instrumental to many goals such as romantic goals or academic goals or business goals or etc. People, though, should not be instrumental to our plans because it degrades them and/or lifts us above humanity where we cannot experience the depth of sympathy and love for another filling us with pride and bitterness.
