You cant have it both ways... You cant say they are children and they are old enough to make choices for themselves and then turn around and not hold them responsible for their bad acts because they are just children. You also cant tell me I am responsible for taking care of them, financially and otherwise, until they reach legal age and not hold me responsible for their behavior when I have been warned of the bad acts they are committing. If we were held more accountable as parents maybe we would pay more attention to what their children really are doing instead of making excuses for them. But then, that also means you have to live what you expect your children to learn. Not just adopt the old do as I say, not as I do attitude!
