You can’t tear her spirit apart! When you are young, you are full of ambitions and aspirations. Your life is ahead of you and the sky is the limit. But for ITE student, Nur Izzati Kamisan, a visit to the doctor in March this year turned her life into a nightmare. The spunky 21-year-old was diagnosed with multiple exostoses, and according to the doctor, time was not on her side. Overwhelmed with sadness and shock, Izzati said: “I have learnt to accept my fate. But I kept asking myself, ‘Why me? You cry, you dont cry, you still have to move on!” Overcoming her pain, Izzati gathered her strength, indulged in her love for photography and published a photo journal. Being a digital photography student, she wanted to document her life’s journey so that all the bittersweet memories are never forgotten. As a North East resident from Hougang, North East CDC supported her by distributing 500 copies of her book to the residents of North East District, and also providing platforms for her to share her story and message that, “No matter how tough life is, there is still hope.” Moved by her resolute strength, Mr Teo Ser Luck, Mayor of North East District said: “So many of us are busy over mundane day-to-day affairs, worrying about the future, and not making time for the people or things we love. We tend to forget that perhaps the best way to build the future is to make the most of the present moment. Although time is not on her side, Izzati remains positive and is determined to live life to the fullest.” With a strong and loving family supporting her, Izzati showed no sign of weakness. She remains upbeat just like any young free spirited souls, hurrying on with the seconds of her life armed with her camera, because according to her, time should not be wasted. Izzati is currently raising funds to pay for her medical bills through the sale of her own newly designed lollies.
