“You do not seem to understand, as any alumnus of Notre Dame should understand, that ‘You dont have to be from Ireland to be Irish.’ The term as applied to the Notre Dame athlete has for decades in everybodys understanding - except your own, as it seems - meant merely that he possesses in some degree certain qualities in which the sons of Erin excel - among others, wit, grit and patriotism.
