You don’t have to be a wimp to be meek. When I am talking about meekness and gentleness I am not necessarily saying that you are mild mannered. It doesn’t mean you will never get your feather’s ruffled. When I talk about being gentle I don’t want you to think of someone who is short, skinny, has Coke-a-Cola bottles for glasses, slicks his hair back with Vaseline, sings soprano in the church choir and looks like a toothpick at both ends. We are not talking Pee Wee Herman here. You can be strong and have convictions and you can speak up and speak out and yet do it with a spirit of gentleness. Theodore Roosevelt put it best, “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” You can come across without coming across cross. When you are with Jesus you are at ease even though you are in the presence of God himself, because with Jesus there was always this spirit of meekness and gentleness. The point is if Jesus himself was meek and Jesus himself was gentle, then we ought to want to emulate that same fruit in our lives, because that is the way He was and that is the way we ought to be.
