È stato distribuito come singolo nel maggio 1978 e poi ripubblicato nel gennaio 1979. Fu il singolo di debutto dei Dire Straits ed è anche una fra le loro canzoni più note, grazie agli ingegnosi fill e agli assoli di Mark Knopfler che mescolano virtuosismo e tecnica nel suo fingerpicking (che riporta al Bluegrass). Fu subito apprezzata dalla critica, e raggiunse rapidamente i vertici delle classifiche. La particolarità per cui piacque maggiormente fu sicuramente lassolo finale, contenente una parte molto veloce, messa in posizione strategica per compensare lapparente monotonia dellintera canzone. La classica risposta della chitarra alla voce (fill) è una peculiarità di Knopfler, così come le timbriche pulite. La storia dipinta dalla canzone è quella di un gruppo jazz, i Sultans of swing, composto da impiegati londinesi che pensano solo alla loro musica senza interessi per la popolarità - si esibiscono solamente in un piccolo club di Londra. Il testo dipinge varie scene che si possono vedere nel locale: due componenti particolarmente significativi del gruppo impegnati a suonare, dei ragazzi vestiti alla moda che non sono assolutamente interessati alla musica, luomo che, alla fine della serata, congeda il pubblico.
