You guys. Seriously. This whole poverty alleviation thing and - TopicsExpress

You guys. Seriously. This whole poverty alleviation thing and orphan care thing...they are the cry of my heart. I know, know, KNOW God cares deeply for the poor and the broken, and so I do, too. But I am just as poor and broken. Not materially, but in other ways. I know that I have friends on Facebook that are deeply involved in these issues...some as a vocation, some as a personal passion. Almost all of them know so much more about this issue than I do. But I am a student of truth! I want to know! So I am researching always...how to do better. How to grow closer in line with what God would have me do in these areas. Two years ago I read When Helping Hurts with They Are One. It totally changed my perspective on poverty...but I am a SLOW learner. Here is the first in a series of videos by the authors of the book. It really is such good stuff. And it can stress me out if I let it...I am doing so much wrong! But I know this is my path and I am walking it the best I can...I have grown in my understanding of my own poverty as well as ways to build relationships and heal my own brokenness. Its such good stuff. So...Im watching these videos again and I want to share them with you. If even one person watches them, it will be worth it. Here are some of the points that struck home with me this watching: That basic disconnect between how we think of poverty-as a lack of material things-and how they think of poverty, is at the root of the crisis we are trying to address. Weve got to get the diagnosis right. Over 1 billion people world-wide suffer from chronic hunger. But only 10% of these people require relief as a response. Helping a family or community facing this crisis may not only avoid the heart of the problem, but may actually inhibit any future development. One of the key issues in well-meaning people who want to help poor people is they often can end up creating a system of paternalism...which is habitually doing for people and providing for people thins they can do and provide for themselves. https://youtube/watch?v=a339VZRE3CM
