You have been a wicked lad.. the Judge had said to him..You broke the law by your own hand.., your future now looks dim You will have the Convict Brand, and you must go away..To that place Van Diemans Land..and thats where you will stay.. Then they put him on a ship, his legs they trapped in chains, and when he spoke out loudly, they whipped him with their canes.. What thoughts were in that young fair head as he sailed to here? And was he old enough to know the dread, the pain, the fear? Was he thinking of his mother and all that hed left there..and did she ever think of him..and through the years still care? Did he ever wish he hadnt joined that Convict Band..and did he ever wish to be back in his homeland? I often think about him and wish Id known him as a lad..For all that Ive learnt of him..He wasnt really bad.. No words could he read nor write..and there upon his will The familiar mark of a convict..was made there with a quill.. He served his time and so was free..Sarah was his wife..then they reared a family he was settled to his life.. Was he really happy with the little that he had..Or did he think of other times..and then did he feel sad? He didnt come with riches nor money in his hand..He didnt come through his own choice..and wasnt granted land.. He worked hard for all he had..and might have wished for more.. But he knew in his own heart, he was richer than before. Did he look towards the future to a time in years to come.. When hed no longer be..just a name passed down for some ..? If I could talk to him right now..and go back to that time, Id say to him how proud I am, that his past is mine.. Its very strange to think of him but never know his face..just a name in my heart..a stranger in this place For I owe much to that proud man and wish that he could hear.. that I feel no shame for him..and I hold his memory dear.. Now I wander to that spot where he lays in peace..with no marker there to tell when his life did cease.. Just a lonely spot on earth and nothing there to see.. But he left his mark in time..and a future life for me..
