You inspired mankind, when none had a clue... You were once mocked for your black skin And your brothers punished, what was their sin Only born to a color disliked, they had been From which the ugly prejudice would begin Advocates of the devil feared your grin Your mind and soul, and everything therein The future at that time none could have seen That one day you would prosper, you were destined to win Twenty seven years of injustice and darkness The whole word wept and mourned in sadness Unfairly convicted and imprisoned with harshness You remained a hero who denied hopelessness Charged with treason, you were the South Africa’s Great Black Hope You crushed bigotry, with injustice you can’t cope Your nation shone, while others in darkness grope All salute you, From layman to expert, Black to white, atheist to pope! What you taught is wisdom and perseverance, The heart matters more, than external appearance Forget how we look, for that is a poison Which kills what’s genuine, while dignity it crimson Is the farewell near? I don’t want to know All hearts are heavy to let you go We don’t have enough, to pay you what we owe Your life means a lot to friends and foe Sooner or later you’ll have to leave We will all pray, and we will all grieve Your life chronicles have made us all believe That truth will prevail, prejudice can’t deceive Oh Mandela, I pray for you You inspired mankind, when none had a clue Apartheid still lives, though it should have perished And you can’t stay forever, but your spirit will be eternally cherished
