You know Ella Jenkins was one of Big Bill Broonzy - The Blues best friends. The Kingston Mines and Earl of Old Town as well as the Gate of Horn were a few of her favorite places to go. Ella went to many sing a longs and house parties in Chicago with young artists like, Elvin Bishop, Mike Bloomfield, Bob Gibson & Hamilton Camp. She also engaged in Chalk Talks with Peggy Lipschutz & Jenny Armstrong. Sang with the Urban Gateways choir and Guy Gilbert. She was great friends with Odetta. Did you know Blind Arvella Grey taught her a song, Up and Down This Road I Go that she arranged for the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and one of their choreographed pieces in everyone of their performances. Ella met her oldest friend, Joyce at Funference, one of the first interracial groups that would gather for conversation. Joyce was there today! So many have been touched by Ella. Here are a few from the Old Town School of Folk Music and New York City, Jeanie B, Ann Torralba, Laura Doherty & Brady Rymer who have been inspired by Ella Jenkins: Well Sing a Song Together. Here is a special song from them for you, Ella
