You know, I dont think I realised why Gravity worked for me until after I saw Interstellar. Interstellar was a film with a needlessly complicated plot, with dull characters that do little except perform technobabble or speak exposition. Gravity, on the other hand, was a fairly simple story, and thus it had more room to make connections with its characters. Some might say that it was just a visual spectacle, but Im guessing those people would say the same thing about 2001 or Fantasia. The film is more about an experience, and its a thrilling experience. In addition, I felt more for the characters in the story where, ironically, less was at stake. Ive said it before, but Im sick of all these sci-fi movies where the whole worlds gone to hell due to humanitys recklessness or a neo-fascist government, and the only thing that can save the world is one or more doe-eyed protagonists...unfortunately, by placing the fate of the world in the hands of bland characters you dont care about, it creates a bleakness that breeds apathy within the viewer. The worst that could happen in Gravity if the protagonist fails? She dies. Thats it. But by focusing the movie primarily on that one character, and giving her emotional depth, it works!
