You know, I find the modern understanding of pain really useful - TopicsExpress

You know, I find the modern understanding of pain really useful for dealing with grief, too. The way the entire neural experience can reignite in response to a trivial stimulus -- how there is not in fact a terribly useful distinction to be made between the original pain and the derivative pain -- and that fact that you need to move and experience other stimuli from the same places, if you want your responses to change. So much chronic pain comes I think from the fact that when our nervous systems evolved, the idea that we would actually be able to hold still in response to pain -- for days, weeks, months, years -- would have been preposterous. So it just depended for its resets on the fact that wed get so hungry or scared that wed *have* to run, climb, jump again. But we -- poor little rich kids -- dont have to. And we dont. And the pain switches never recalibrate.
