You know, I was born and raised in the south back when institutionalized racism was still legal. Back when being gay meant one was a pariah. I really, truly thought that we were becoming better. I truly thought that racism and homophobia were done. I thought that my aunt, who has been with her partner was 34 years, would be accepted. I thought that what happened in my high school years, when one of my girlfriends started dating a Black guy, and they were harassed horribly, would just end. I really thought that the world had changed and that we would be better. It makes me so, so sad when I realize that I was wrong.
