You know, Im far from a perfect parent, for sure! But I breathe a little sigh of relief when I read things like this and know for a fact that I do not ever (intentionally, of course) do any of these things, and I try to be very conscious of these very things when raising my kids. This article, to me, says: Your kids are not you. Your children are people. They are their very own beings. It is YOUR job to offer them guidance and love, not squish their spirits or at the opposite, protect them from life itself. Its important to let them learn and grow and use all your hairspray to spike their hair, or do what Keller did today and wear a clip on tie with a skeleton tee shirt and a vest to school, or do what Dylan does and sing metal songs about cheetahs in the shower even though its SO loud... And laugh. LAUGH at the things that you dont understand, rather than scold them for the things you dont understand. There are exceptions, of course, but I digress. You gotta let your kids discover themselves, make mistakes and know they are still loved but have consequences, and you have to talk to your kids as people. Because they are. They are real life people with dreams and dislikes and loves and hearts that break. Treat them as such. Let their hearts break as a result of their own actions. Let them cry when their heart is broken, give them a hug, and then let them know theyre still grounded or in time out or that they still have to do their homework before they play, even though it breaks their heart. And maybe yours, a little.
